A Lost Love !
A LOST LOVE !
I was left with nothing. Whatever I had was taken away – taken away by her. Ah! How I still remember that day vividly.
It was a sunny day – just perfect for a stroll. And so she invited me out. She looked as dazzling as the sun in that summery yellow gown. I’ve been around her since our childhood yet every time she smiles, I’m amazed. Amazed at how a lady like her exists. She’s like a breath of fresh air in my suffocating life.
“Davis”, she said and I was pulled out of my thoughts.
“Davis, why are you in a daze? I’ve called you quite a few times now.”
“Well um it’s nothing. I’m sorry”
“Nothing? O dear, how can it be nothing? You had this smirk on your face. Just tell me, did you fall for some young lady?”
And I sighed. You see this was the problem. No matter how hard I try, she never really takes any hint. How do I tell her that there’s no young lady, it’s always been her. It’s always been my Em.
“Oh dear no. There’s no young lady. You tell me, what made you call me out?”, I replied.
“Davis, I’m so very happy to tell you that I’ve fallen for….”
‘say it’s me, say it’s me.’ A little voice said inside my brain.
“… Mr. Wilson.” She finished.
And my heart dropped.
“Mr. Wilson? John Wilson? But he’s the most disagreeable dandy that there is. Why would you fall for him?”, I retorted.
“Oh no Davis. You don’t talk about Mr. Wilson like that. He’s such a sweetheart. I have loved him since the first time I laid my eyes on him. You must support me. I’m finally in love.” She said innocently, unaware of my love for her.
“Support you? Of course I support you in everything you do but this, I’m afraid not. I can’t send you to your death. Emily, you must not fall for him.”
“You’re being selfish now. Just because you don’t have a Miss doesn’t mean I can’t find my Mr. Right.” , she snapped.
And in that moment, all was lost. She doesn’t love me – I can accept it. But the fact that she thinks that I’m doing this out of my own selfish desire is just unacceptable and shocking. I never thought she’ll think of me this way. I know now that none of my reproaches would work. She was stubborn and nothing would change her mind.
“Then I wish you all the happiness in the world. May he treat you like a queen. But remember, if you ever need me, I’m always there for you.” And as I said this, my throat began to choke and the air suddenly felt suffocating.
“I knew it. I knew you’d be happy for me.” She smiled.
“Ah.” I sighed and started to walk back.
“..Aye! Davis? Where are you going?? What does this mean? Dave- … Davis..” She was shouting in the background but I didn’t look back.
I didn’t look back to reveal my face full of tears. How could I? She was someone else’s now.
My lifelong support. My childhood best friend. The love of my life. She took all of them away from me. All of them in one moment.
‘phatchhh’
I had just walked into a puddle. It was only then did I realize that I had lost her. She was going to be married and it was raining.
