‘Literatų Street’@ Vilnius, in Honour of Literature.
Literatų Street @ Vilnius
The cobblestoned and artistic vivid streets of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, mesmerises its visitors. In every part of the city – the downtown, the Old Town or other neighbourhoods, one can discover eye-catching street art or some times abandoned old buildings or some churches. Every street has a story to be told. Especially the streets of the Old Town surprises you and many times leaves you wanting for more.
One such Street would stay with me as a souvenir of my LithuaniaTrip. For this street, I would always carry a lot of respect and love for Lithuania, a special place in my heart.
The street which I am talking about is the ‘Literatų Street’.
Lithuanians are very proud of their Literature heritage. The name ‘Literatu means “writers” in Lithuanian. This lovely street is like an open-air gallery. Its walls are decorated with small objects made of metal, wood and glass as tributes to writers who have influenced Lithuanian literature.
This is the street where once lived the Polish and Lithuanian poet Adam Mickiewicz (born in 1798 ). In 2008, a group of Lithuanian artists got an idea to revive the street and decorate one wall of it with plates and small objects made of wood, glass, metal and other materials, all this in honour of the people who have contributed to Lithuanian literature.
Lithuanians respect for literature and respect for authors was very evident, whenever I told them about me being an author. I will always cherish the adoration I received for the same.
Literatų Street is a significant place for Lithuanian literature lovers, they consider it like a temple.
After seeing the street, I just had one wish, ‘Why this is not in India?’
