SHIBI Visits Dog-Shelter (Part 6)
SHIBI’s DIARY
My name is SHIBI, I am 6 months old Beagle puppy and this is my diary. In this diary, I shall write about my life. You may question, ‘Can dogs write? What stories do they have to tell? They only eat, sleep and bark.’
‘Yess…Why dogs cannot have stories? Are we not living beings? Do we not go through tough times? Is our life honky-dory always as they show in movies?’

Part 6- SHIBI Visits Dog-Shelter
Last few days, I could hear a lot of discussion between Big Bro, Momma and Papa, and of course, it was about me. I think nowadays I am the center of all their talk.
SHIBI…SHIBI… I can hear continuously.
Finally, one day Big Bro said, ‘Shibi, we will go to a place today where you can meet many other dogs like you. You can play with them.’
I was very excited. Last few months my only interaction was with humans. Though I had made a friend Joey – another fellow Beagle, meeting him was very limited, once in a week, that too for a few minutes, during our morning walk.
I look forward to visiting such a place.
Evening we all got into the car and went to a place near to our home. I noticed it was Dr Neha’s clinic. I did not want to go inside the clinic as last time she had injected me. But I liked Dr Neha very much. So, I waited patiently and soon a man came out of the clinic.
Big Bro said, ‘Shibi, this is a dog shelter. Here you can stay for a few hours or even days, and play with other dogs.’
I wagged my tail in excitement.
After some time, Big Bro, and all of us followed the man. He took us to the first floor through the stairs. I could get the smell of many dogs, and my excitement grew. I jumped many steps, forcing Big Bro to almost run. Suddenly I heard the barking of many dogs. I could not understand what they were saying so I increased my speed and with high curiosity, I entered the room along with Big Bro, Papa and Momma.
I saw there were many cages, and inside each cage, a dog was tied up. I remembered Jack’s shop where I was in such a cage for many days. I saw Big Bro and Papa discussing with the owner of the place. The dogs were continuously barking, telling me, ‘Run away from this place! You will be caged like us!’
Big Bro shouted, ‘Shibi, come meet other dogs!’.
I took a fast decision. Before they could anticipate, I pulled the chain and ran out of the room… I ran… ran … for my life. I don’t want to go into a cage. That is not my life. I took big leaps and came down the stairs.
Big Bro came running after me, shouting ‘Shibi….Shibi…’. and so did Papa. But I firmly refused to go back. Soon we returned home.
I was very upset with Big Bro; this is the place where he wanted me to stay?
At night, I heard them again having serious discussions.
Papa said, ‘I cannot keep Shibi in the dog shelter. The place might be good and hygienic but our Shibi is our princess, we cannot keep her in a cage. She is a small puppy. Let us look for other alternatives.’
Big Bro said, ‘There is no alternative. We have to take her along with us. We have to travel by our car. It is almost 1200 Km journey but we cannot leave Shibi here.’
Papa said, ‘We have tried keeping her in a hotel. That time she was a nuisance. I hope this time she will be better.’
They seem to have reached an agreement.
I was now curious what is this long drive they are talking about? Don’t they know I am very uncomfortable in the car? I don’t like to stay in a hotel either. But then I did not want to be left behind. Yes Papa, I will be a good dog in the hotel. I want to come along.
