Part 19 : dew and the Mist
Veil of the Mist
‘Kusumita, please get this file from my Study, I am sending someone to collect it.’ He said in a damp tone and disconnected the phone before she could reply.
Disappointed, Kusum went to Nihar’s Study and searched for the file he had asked in the drawer of the table. As her fingers moved through the piles of files, her eyes got stuck on one of the files labelled ‘Radhika Chopra’ and she could not tap her curiosity, and opened it. Her eyes widened as she went through the details of the file. It was a legal document stating that Mr Keshav Chopra, father of Radhika, has named all his properties in the name of Radhika and if something happens to her then it would be in the name of Nihar Singh.
She was stunned and nervously sank into the chair. So all along Mohit was saying the truth…?
YES! Mohit told her again and again but she never actually believed him. Indeed Radhika’s all properties were now with Nihar. She looked at the date on the contract, it was before their marriage. Her mind swelled up with doubts. She felt lost…stupid. She closed her eyes and tried to untangle all the facts.
‘Why her father named the properties in Nihar’s name or is it another way, did he demand? And why he took it? Why he signed the paper?’
‘Kusumita, he lied to you. In fact, he was never in love with Radhika. If he was really in love with her then why he removed her things so easily and then it’s only two months of marriage with you and he is claiming love for you? He is doing all this only for the reason that you don’t leave him, to keep everyone’s mouth shut about him.’
She felt she lost her life; her last breath of trust.
Morning she was so happy, she wanted to confess her love for him but now she felt like being taken for a ride all along. She fell into the trap of his innocent eyes.
She got up with a jerk and decided, ‘No, I cannot live with this stress anymore. My heart is not letting me think, I am getting blinded by his love. I should leave this place immediately.’
‘But Kusumita, Nihar….? Think once again.’ Her heart cautioned her but she was so upset by the revelation of the truth, she shirked off all thoughts.
Kusum reached the railway station and took the tickets. She sat on the bench and waited for the train to come. The crowd at the station accumulated and then dispersed. The trains arrived and departed. A vicious cycle! She sighed. Her tears had dried up but emotions still ran thick. She closed her eyes and all the events of the last few days started rolling in front of her eyes.
Tears started coming in as she remembered their first meeting. She remembered her reluctance to marry but then she agreed after meeting him. She had felt an instant connection to him. In just a few moments, her life changed completely.
She took a deep breath and looked at her cell phone. There were many missed call notifications from Nihar. Thinking that he might be worrying about her, she wanted to call him back, to let him know that she is fine. But then she was reminded of her decision and firmly she hung up the phone.
She sat down again and started thinking about the next.
She has decided to leave him but where would she go? She didn’t want to go back to her village but she had no other option. She knew her family would be disappointed to see her back. Tears trickled down as she felt stranded. She decided to call her sister Bindiya.
Her tears choked her throat and started crying as she heard Bindiya’s voice. Bindiya was immediately concerned ‘Kusum, what happened?’
Kusum burst into anger, ‘Bindu, he lied to me. I cannot live with him anymore.’
‘But Kusum, you only told me a few days back that everything is now fine between the two of you.’
‘It was all fake. He duped me.’ Kusum cried loudly.
‘Calm down and tell me all.’ Bindu tried to pacify her.
Kusum wiped away her tears and slowly narrated about the file and her decision to leave him.
Bindu listened to her patiently. Then she asked, ‘Kusum, how could you be so stupid? Did you walk away just because of that file without giving him a chance to explain? Is this what you claim love to be?’
Kusum was taken aback by Bindu’s allegation but then quickly defended herself, ‘He has lied to me again and again. I cannot be with him now. I can no longer ping-pong in doubts!’
‘Kusum, some people can never understand love!’ and Bindiya hung up the phone.
Kusum disappointedly looked at her cell phone and sat down on the bench. She closed her eyes in frustration. Is Bindiya right? Is she committing a mistake? No, she should not let her heart rule and deny all the pieces of evidence.
She wanted a moment of calmness. She shrug off the thoughts and closed her eyes. She wanted to stick to her decision. She took a deep breath and tried to control all spiking emotions. Soon all the noisy thoughts faded away, and she transcended deeper into her consciousness; experienced a sense of being with herself, alone. And she saw Nihar’s teary eyes prodding her.
‘So, you also left me?’ He asked.
‘Yes, I can no longer live with your lies.’ She quickly answered.
‘Lies..? What about your love for me?’ He asked.
‘I don’t trust you.’
‘So you also don’t understand me?’
‘I understand you.’
‘So why are you leaving me then?’ His eyes were mist and his voice was low.
His image faded away; she opened her eyes with a jerk and got up hastily. She thought for a moment, hurriedly lifted her bags and rushed out of the station.
