Part 16: My friend (un)Lucky!
SHIBI’s DIARY
My name is SHIBI, I am a Beagle puppy and this is my diary. In this diary, I shall write about my life. You may question, ‘Can dogs write? What stories do they have to tell? They only eat, sleep and bark.’
‘Yess…Why dogs cannot have stories? Are we not living beings? Do we not go through tough times? Is our life honky-dory always as they show in movies?’

Part 16: My friend (un)Lucky!
Do our names signify our state of affairs? Not always! Luckily, I am named SHIBI which does not have any meaning as such -;) but for my friend Lucky, no longer luck was on his side.
My friend ‘Lucky, a golden retriever, used to stay next door to our house. His house was big and beautiful with a big lawn. Every morning, while going on a walk, Momma and I used to stop at his house. Most of the time I used to find him lazying on the grass or walking on the terrace of the house. Momma made sure that we give a stop at his house, for me to have a dog-chat with Lucky for a minute and then proceed. Being a senior dog, Lucky would advise me sometimes and also enquire about my well-being.
For the last few days, I found him very sad. I asked him the reason but he refused to divulge any. Later, momma told me, ‘Looks like his owner has gone away. There is a big lock on the door. I wonder if he is getting the food.’
The next morning, I found Lucky sleeping near the gate. He did not get up on seeing me like he always used to do. He did not even lift his face. I saw his food bowl was untouched. It seems he did not have his meal.
I was worried for him, and I went near to him and asked, ’Are you sick?’
He didn’t answer.
I then asked, ‘When is your owner coming back?’
A tear dropped from his eye, ‘I am not sure. They left with all their bags.’
I was really worried, ‘Oh! so what are you going to do now?’
‘Woof, you go on your walk, stop worrying about me!’ He scolded me.
I was very worried for him, I looked at Momma, requesting her, ‘Can we take Lucky to our house?’
Momma gave me a hard stare. I obliged and sat quietly.
Suddenly she exclaimed, ‘Looks like the owner has left. See, the board of ‘To-Let’ on the gate.
I immediately looked at Lucky who turned his face and walked away. His pride was hurt, for his owner of many years had left him without telling him the reason.
Momma then said, ‘But look, someone is giving him food, his food bowl is full.’
I too had noticed that, but I understood why Lucky was not eating food. He was missing the loving hands which used to serve him.
The next morning, momma took dog food with her. I was surprised and happy to see Lucky waiting eagerly for us, he waved his tail and grabbed the food as soon as momma gave him. I and Lucky chatted for a minute; I told him not to worry as someone will soon take care of him.
Lucky told me that my visit makes him happy as he gets no one to talk to the whole day.
It continued for a few days- momma would take dog food, and give it to Lucky. I and Lucky would play for some time on the lawn.
But one morning I could not find him at the gate. I barked many times but he did not come out. I was anxious and looked at Momma for she too appeared to be worried. We together looked for him, and then we noticed a lady standing on the lawn. She was a new face to us.
Momma asked her about Lucky. They chatted for a while, and then momma was happy.
I anxiously looked at her as she turned to me. She told me, ’SHIBI, do not worry. Your friend is safe. His owner’s family had to move to another city in an emergency. They returned yesterday and now have taken Lucky along with them.’
I was happy and sad too; Happy for Lucky and sad as meeting him every morning had become a daily ritual for me. I smiled at my momma as she patted me. She told me, ‘SHIBI, many times, situations go bad not people.’
By the way, I got a new jacket with my name engraved. What do you think about it?
