Part 14: An Awesome Diwali!
SHIBI’s DIARY
My name is SHIBI, I am a Beagle puppy and this is my diary. In this diary, I shall write about my life. You may question, ‘Can dogs write? What stories do they have to tell? They only eat, sleep and bark.’
‘Yess…Why dogs cannot have stories? Are we not living beings? Do we not go through tough times? Is our life honky-dory always as they show in movies?’

Part 14: An Awesome Diwali!
Diwali…Diwali…! Everyone was talking about Diwali….what is that? I wondered.
I noticed Momma had bought many gifts, clothes, decorative items and Puja items. She told me not to touch them, and I was curious to know why?
I looked at momma and asked, ‘Woof, Woof!’
She said, ‘In a few days, we are going to celebrate Diwali festival, a very big celebration!! And this is going to be your first Diwali.’
I caught the words, ‘Celebration’ and ‘First’, the same she had told me a month back when I turned one year. Then she told me, ‘This is your first birthday but we will have a grand celebration when your Big-Bro will come’.
I wondered, how one feels when you have to celebrate your birthday after a month or maybe two months…? Anyway, I do not care much about it. For me, my birthday was my day, and I felt happy about being alive.
Suddenly I remembered, how we can celebrate Diwali, when Big-Bro is not in the house and also, Papa too was away for the last few days.
I asked, ‘Woof, Woof!’
In return, Momma scolded me, ‘Shibi, you go and play, I have plenty of work to do.’
I took my ball and came to my play area. Without Papa, the house looks very empty. How one can celebrate when he is not around? I wondered and kept chewing the ball. Anyway, why worry when Momma is not worried?
After dinner, I went to sleep and Momma was on her laptop. Momma always says, that I am not a dog when it comes to sleep, as I take deep sleep like a human. But that night, as the doorbell rang, I immediately knew from the smell that Papa had come. I rushed to the door and danced like Madonna… I was so happy to see him after so many days…
The next morning Momma told me, ‘Shibi, this Diwali is going to be very special for you…your grandparents are here, last night your papa came, and today you are going to get a bigger surprise…’
I rolled my eyes, what surprise…? The word ‘surprise’ always makes me anxious.
Evening we all went into our Jeep on a long drive. I was restless again as I don’t like being in any enclosed box. As soon the Jeep stopped, I realised I have come to this place many times. The smell was familiar, and before I could make it out about the place, my Big-Bro was in front of me. I started dancing and this time it was not Madonna’s dance but in true MJ….style…!
When we returned, I licked Momma’s face, she smiled, ‘I told you Shibi, this Diwali is going to be very special for you…’
‘Woof…Woof…!’ I was happy. My Diwali was indeed made special by my Papa and Big-Bro, and of course Momma.
The next morning, I was very curious and kept running from one place to another as Big-Bro decorated the house with lights and flowers. Then came the evening, the puja and so many food items to eat.
Later Big-Bro took me to the terrace, along with Papa, Momma and grandparents, and then I got the scariest experience of my life, the loud sound of crackers bursting. I came down running like a scared rat and hid under the bed, shivering. Big-Bro kept calling me, but I did not dare to come out. I stayed there for hours, till the lights of the house went off. Slowly I came out of hiding.
So how was my first Diwali ! Awesome ! I loved the decoration, the smell of Diyas and of course the lights, sweets, Big-Bro and Papa, Momma, all….. except the loud sound. So my request to all humans, ‘Celebrate Diwali with sweets and love but with not loud crackers, as many living beings like me cannot tolerate the loud sound!!
Happy Diwali! Woof.. Woof…!
